Still not sure about becoming a volunteer….
Okay, so your cell phone is ringing, that beeper is still going
off, and you’re on the internet all at the same time - your life
is busy and you’re stressed. Yet, believe or not, there’s still
time to help make the world a better place. From helping an elderly
neighbor with their shopping, to tutoring a child, volunteers make
a vital contribution to all aspects of community life.
There’s no one picture of what a volunteer looks like. A volunteer
is anybody who’s willing to give a helping hand. The benefits of
volunteering run on a two-way street. It isn’t just about helping
others- it’s about helping yourself as well. Volunteering makes
you feel good. It’s an opportunity to make new friends, develop
new skills and broaden your sense of the world. Overall, volunteering
contributes to and enriches your life as well as someone
else’s.
If we intend to confront the spread of HIV in our community, we
must lend our time and our energy. Here are some suggestions you
might try:
1. Volunteer to deliver food to a home-bound
AIDS patient
2. Spend time with HIV infected children at a
local hospice
3. Become an HIV/AIDS peer educator
4. Help out at a local AIDS fundraiser
5. Spend a few hours answering calls at a local
HIV/AIDS hotline
Concerned that you don’t have enough time? Most places offer a variety of time
commitments to help fit into your schedule. There are one-day projects,
once a week projects, ongoing “fit-it-in-when-you–can” projects,
and part-time internships.
Make a flexible commitment!
When it comes to HIV/AIDS, our community is suffering and it needs our attention
now. If everyone said, “Oh, I’ll let someone else do the volunteering,”
where would we all end up? The effort we make is the difference
we’ll see in the world.
